How did you get into Computer Science?
I am blessed to say that my parents saw the value of technology and computer science and worked hard to ensure that our family would not be left behind. I was probably about 5 years old when we purchased our first home computer. Throughout high school, I would help my father purchase and build multiple computers over the years. I took my first coding class in college. Even though I wasn’t a computer science major, my love for computer science was evident.
What successes and challenges have you experienced as a CS educator?
As I started teaching, I looked for any way possible to bring technology and computer science into my classroom. I have introduced students from every grade K-12 to different coding opportunities. I am proud to say that I have provided experiences, knowledge, and skills that will allow students to excel in our constantly changing digital world.
What’s going well in your classroom?
My current position is “Media Arts Production” education. To some this may sound like I have steered away from computer science, when in fact, it is just the opposite. I continue to work with the PGCPS Computer Science department and PGCPS to provide computer science training to educators and to provide computer science events to students of all ages. As a Media Arts Production educator, I am able to expose students to ways that computer science is found in day to day life with a specific focus of the importance of computer science and coding in the world of media arts production. This includes, but is not limited to photography, animation, video, database design, computer graphics, and human-computer interaction.
