How did you get into Computer Science?
My first experience with computer science was in the mid 90s when I was in high school. I took a class in which we used Quick Basic to program. While I found the content easy to learn, it didn't pique my interest. Then I was required to take a class in C++ as a math major in college. While I enjoyed this class, I was never introduced to potential career opportunities in the field. It was just a box to check so that I could become a math teacher. For about 20 years, I didn't think much more about CS as I established myself as a high school math teacher. Then, in 2021, after two years in my current school, I was given the opportunity to teach Foundations of Computer Science. After teaching math for so long, I welcomed the change to a course that had the potential to be more flexible and fun for my students. Taking my class would be a choice for my students, not a requirement, although it did meet a state requirement. Now, I have been teaching CS every semester for three years.
What are some successes and challenges you’ve experienced?
My biggest challenge has been my own confidence level with computer science. I still feel very much like a novice; I am fairly confident helping my Foundations students learn to program, but am less confident with my new AP CSP course. I'm sure I will gain confidence the more I teach it. I'm only in my first year so far.
What do you find compelling about CS?
One of my favorite aspects of teaching CS vs. math is that it provides students with more choice in how they learn and how they demonstrate their understanding. While they need to use the same concepts, how they use them and the topics of their programs can differ widely. I also love that CS is used in so many industries so my students can find applications to meet their various needs and interests.
What’s going well for you now?
I have been expanding my network of colleagues and I have a greater comfort level with reaching out for help. I also am gaining more confidence in my planning and implementing of curriculum to best fit my students' needs.
Do you have any advice or resources to share?
As you teach a course, make notes of changes you want to make for future classes. I am regularly changing the way I teach as I discover new resources or make new connections.
